Sri Lanka Cricket Scraps Controversial Instagram Followers Rule After Massive Backlash

The Lanka Premier League (LPL 2026) is already making headlines months ahead of its start after organizers dropped one of the most controversial player registration rules, following widespread online criticism.

What Was the Controversial Instagram Followers Rule?

Earlier this week, the LPL introduced unusual eligibility criteria for overseas players, making social media following an official requirement alongside cricketing achievements.

  • Icon & Star players were required to have more than 250,000 Instagram followers.
  • Gold players needed at least 150,000 followers.
  • Classic players were expected to have “reasonable commercial appeal and fan engagement.”

The rule sparked immediate debate, with many questioning why Instagram popularity was suddenly considered a factor in professional cricket selection. Critics argued that a player’s skill and performance should always outweigh online popularity.

Backlash Forces LPL To Remove Social Media Requirement

Fans highlighted the irony: professional cricketers have often been advised to minimize social media distractions to focus on the sport. Several supporters noted that talented players who are less active online could have been unfairly excluded despite strong T20 records or experience in other leagues.

After intense criticism across platforms, Sri Lanka Cricket and LPL organizers removed the Instagram requirement, confirming the update via Sri Lankan journalist Azzam Ameen on X. This ends one of the most unusual eligibility rules in franchise cricket history.

LPL 2026 Tournament Details

The LPL first started in 2020 with five regional teams: Jaffna Stallions, Galle Gladiators, Dambulla Vikings, Colombo Kings, and Kandy Tuskers. The Jaffna Stallions have been the most successful team, winning the title three times.

The 2026 edition is set to run from July 10 to August 5, with matches scheduled across four venues:

  • SSC Colombo
  • R. Premadasa International Stadium, Colombo
  • Pallekele International Stadium
  • Dambulla International Stadium

With Sri Lanka Cricket under government control, LPL 2026 has been surrounded by pre-tournament controversies. Organizers will now need careful planning to ensure the 6th edition runs smoothly and avoids further disruptions.
