The Lanka Premier League (LPL) is Sri Lanka’s premier franchise Twenty20 cricket tournament, organised by Sri Lanka Cricket. The 2026 edition is the sixth season of the league and marks its return after the competition was last held in 2024. Featuring the country’s top home-grown talent alongside international stars, the LPL has grown into one of Asia’s most exciting T20 leagues.
Quick answer: LPL 2026 runs from 17 July to 8 August 2026, with five teams — Jaffna Kings, Galle Marvels, Kandy Falcons, Dambulla Sixers and Colombo Kaps — playing 24 matches across four venues in Colombo, Dambulla and Kandy.
LPL 2026 format and structure
The tournament follows a double round-robin league stage in which all five teams face each other twice, producing 20 league matches. The top four sides on the points table then advance to the playoffs, made up of Qualifier 1, the Eliminator, Qualifier 2 and the Final. A reserve day on 9 August is set aside in case rain interrupts the title decider.
Why the Lanka Premier League matters
Beyond the entertainment, the LPL plays a serious role in Sri Lankan cricket. It develops emerging local players, gives them exposure to seasoned international cricketers, boosts sports tourism, and strengthens the country’s T20 structure ahead of major global events. With Sri Lanka having co-hosted the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup, the league arrives with extra momentum and upgraded venues.
